Riddle scores back-to-back Apple Cup victories

YAKIMA, Wash. (April 14, 2013)- Owen Riddle passed pole sitter Shane Mitchell in the late going of Sunday's 47th Annual Apple Cup 125 at Yakima Speedway for his second win in the event in as many seasons.

Garrett Evans, Garrett Archer and JC Wofford rounded out the top-5 running order with 20 cars taking the green flag to start the race and only one caution due to a spin from Andy Sole near the race's midway point.

Mitchell and Riddle had made a gentlemen's agreement to stay together until lap 100 then if they were still running one-two make a play for the main victory.

"That was the plan," Riddle said. "But to tell you the truth I was on (Mitchell's) bumper then about lap 90 and figured it was time to go so I went underneath him and got the lead."

For Riddle the victory is a solid way to start off a new season and erase some memories of his last run at Yakima Speedway, in September's Fall Classic, where he fell victim to a late race incident that took him out of contention.

"This one is nice to get and go back-to-back. It doesn't quite erase the Fall Classic but it is nice to get," said the four-time track champion.

Also earning Apple Cup victories were Chris Marang (Pure Stocks), Andy Stibal (Street Stocks), Nick Carey (Legends) and Chris VanAmburg (Sportsman).

Stibal's victory was his second in as many starts at Yakima Speedway on the West Coast Street Stock Series as he picked up the main event victory in the Fall Classic en route to the series championship.

Marang's win continued his strong Pure Stock run at the Speedway as he opened defense of his championship with a win in the season's first event.

Carey, who has won countless Legend races across the country, made quick work of the field to gain the lead then held off a hard charging Randy Schaaf for his first Apple Cup checkered flag.

VanAmburg was challenged by his daughter to win the Apple Cup after winning Saturday's trophy for setting fast time then handing it to his wife and infant son.

"Yea she told me Daddy I want one of those trophies with the apple on it for myself so I had to go out there and see if I could make her happy," VanAmburg said.

Racing returns to Yakima Speedway on May 4 with Late Model Sportsman, Pure Stocks, Sportsman, Hornets and Bump to Pass action all on the famed half-mile. For more information log onto www.yakimaspeedway.us, head to the track's Facebook page or call (509) 248-0647.
